What makes someone start a new IT company in a city full of IT companies? Stick around and I'll tell you.

Hi, I'm Jeremy Colwell, founder and managing director of The Human IT Company, Vancouver's best outsourced IT and computer Support company where we treat you like a human being, not a user. In this first blog post of what is likely to be a good number, we're going to talk about why I decided to start the human IT company. In a city that already has a lot of IT companies, what makes us different?

I've personally been doing computer support since around 1994 and in that time, I've worked in a lot of different environments. I've worked for government agencies, multinational manufacturing firms, and I've worked for other IT support providers. A short while ago I noticed one thing that they all had in common… They always looked at things from the technical perspective. I think that's one of the things that left me unhappy with those situations, because I was always taught to look at things from the human perspective.

Well before I became a techie, I was raised by my grandparents with what are now considered extraordinarily old-fashioned values. I was taught the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, I was taught that no one is better than me, but also that I'm no better than anybody else, and I was taught that supportive people get along better with others then do critical people. I was taught to listen and to talk with people instead of talking at them. (And yes I see the irony of doing a video in that mode 🙂 )

Then I started working in the computer business and I realized that most computer technicians do not believe in the golden rule, they do believe that they are better than everyone else, and they have a nasty habit of talking at people using a lot of technical jargon. And I wasn't really very happy with that. Like many other people I prefer to surround myself with those they have something in common with me. And as I've gotten older I've realized that people who have a strong sense of manners, politeness, and especially empathy are the ones that I get along with best.

Which of course brings me back to my original question… Why would I start a new IT company in a city full of IT companies? Because I believe that there is a different way, because I believe that people want to be treated as people, instead of being treated like users. They want to be treated as human beings instead of being treated as human \computer interface devices.

Since nobody else in the greater Vancouver area is doing IT support with a focus on the human perspective, it seemed to me that there was a gap that needed to be filled. Because at the end of the day, your computer doesn't care if it's broken or not. Your computer doesn't care if it can't access the Internet, or if email won't open. But the person sitting in front of the computer cares, and so we care about how the person is feeling. We fix the computer while we support the person.

So that is our "why" as the marketing people would say. We're here to start a bit of a small revolution; we want to provide solutions and support from the human perspective not from the computer perspective. We want to change the way people look at IT Solutions providers in Metro Vancouver, by speaking with our customers, instead of talking to users. We want to use plain English to explain things, instead of spouting off a mass of geek speak. We want to provide technical solutions that are easy to understand and use, and we want you to know that we've got your back. Yes, the computer might be broken, but we're going to keep you and your data safe, and we're going to make it all work for you. The way you need it to work for you, so that you can do your work instead of managing computers. That's why we call ourselves the human IT company… Because technology is just a tool used by real people.

So, there you have it… Our start of a one company revolution, changing how people see IT and computer support. Starting… now.
